Heart Education: Do you Pop a Pill to Pop a boner? You may have heart disease

I was casually listening to the Joe Rogan podcast the other day, a very intriguing podcast by the way, and Joe just happened to mention that Erectile Dysfunction is an early warning sign of heart disease.  He went on to explain that blood-flow is blood-flow  and that if a man has a blockage to his penis, then there very well could be other blockages forming throughout the body.

This information that he shared was very enlightening, as I personally never thought about this popular issue in such a way.  He inspired me to do a little research of my own, so I did.  And I’m going to share with you the condensed explanation of this issue.

Atherosclerosis is the cause

Atherosclerosis (ath-ur-o-skluh-RO-sis) is a term for when your arteries harden with plaque.  What are arteries?  Those are the blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart to the cells in your body.  So yeah, they’re kind of a big deal and you want those to work right.

When arteries become lined with plaque, it’s harder for blood to get through them.  A good analogy would be a kitchen sink.  When a house is brand new, everything in the kitchen is going to work very well.  But if over the years you start pouring a bunch of stuff down the kitchen sink drain that you shouldn’t, like bacon grease, olive oil, maple syrup, and peanut shells, then your going to find that junk (plaque) adhered to the walls of the pipes (blood vessels) and your drain will work at a very slow speed, if at all (life threatening heart attack).

Popping blue pills is not the solution

Arteries supplying your penis are smaller than those supplying your heart. This is why atherosclerosis may show itself in the form of erectile dysfunction before it shows itself in other parts of the body.

The moral of the story is, don’t view your body in a compartmentalized fashion.  The lack of the ability to produce an erection when it’s show time is not just a penis problem, rather it’s an early warning sign that you need to reassess your heart health because you have a clog in your plumbing.  And once you have atherosclerosis in the arteries that supply your heart versus just your penis, you are considered to have full-on heart disease. A serious matter.
